Biceps tendinopathy

This is another injury brought on by overuse or unaccustomed activity involving the tendon that flexes the elbow. Weight training is a common cause but a sudden increase in any lifting can bring on the problem. A new mum presented recently after developing the condition in response to the additional lifting and carrying associated with caring for her baby.

It is relatively uncommon but can cause severe pain in the front of the joint where the tendon inserts onto the bone making lifting and carrying very difficult. The most important part of treatment is stopping the provocative activity although this can be difficult as the movement is so important functionally.

Physiotherapy will help to offset the stresses to the tendon and reduce pain with techniques such as deep tissue massage, ultrasound, gradual and controlled loading with specific exercises and, should the condition be resistant to conservative treatment, injection therapy can be very effective in treating the more stubborn conditions.
