OA Thumb

Osteoarthritis of the base of the thumb is a very common condition. It is more common in women over 50 years. It occurs less frequently in men but usually after a previous fracture or injury. Patients experience well localised pain at the base of the thumb and provoking activities include unscrewing jars and using the pinch grip between finger and thumb. X-rays of the thumb reveal the typical features of osteo-arthritis and treatment includes physiotherapy to help improve mobility and reduce pain as well as rest, anti-inflammatory drugs and avoidance of provoking activities. Resting with a night splint sometimes helps too. If the symptoms persist, a well placed injection into the joint can bring fantastic relief.
