Michael trained as a physiotherapist at the University of East Anglia and graduated in 1996. Upon graduation he returned to his roots in Sheffield taking up a position in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital where he gained experience in a wide range of disciplines. Moving on Michael took up a senior post at the Children Hospital gaining specialised experience in a range of children’s physiotherapy including orthopaedic conditions. Children’s orthopaedics remains an area of particular interest to Michael. It was Michael’s love of sport and particularly rugby which took Michael to York to work in musculoskeletal outpatients. It was here that he gained valuable experience in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions culminating in his appointment as an Extended Scope Practitioner (ESP) in knee conditions. In June 2005 he returned to Sheffieldto work as an ESP in spinal disorders at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, joining The Physios later the same year.
In 2008 Michael completed his master's dissertation looking into chronic low back pain and was awarded an MSc from Sheffield Hallam University. He continues to divide his time between The Physios, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and time spent researching low back pain and sciatica. He and a colleague have recently been awarded a large grant for a research project looking into the effects of physiotherapy for sciatica.
